Aylesbury Vale Youth Theatre

Aylesbury Vale Youth Theatre aims to give all 16-21 year-olds in Buckinghamshire the opportunity to spend their school holidays learning and developing artistic, technical, teamwork and leadership skills, to the final end of producing a show.

Grant received: £500 Small Grant

What for: The grant was used to hire Pendley Court Theatre for the production of Thoroughly Modern Millie in August 2008.  The project was an enormous success and about 70 people aged 16-21 from Buckinghamshire were involved in all aspects of the show.

Tom Molloy, the Director, wrote to us afterwards:

"Our costume designer was only aged 16 and has a life-long desire to become a clothes designer.  The production gave her the opportunity to design and make costumes for a cast of 24 people.  She had to create about sixty 1920s costumes on a limited budget.  She did a brilliant job and transformed the show.  She said that the opportunity to work on the costumes has cemented her ambition to become a designer.  Furthermore, her mother has thanked AVYT for the opportunity because it has "really brought her out of herself… given her a real focus for the summer… and allowed her to excel in something she loves doing".

"All in all, 70 people have had an incredibly challenging but thoroughly enjoyable summer project.  Without this backing, we could not have afforded to hire the theatre and the project could not have worked."

The Centre has been established for over four years and provides an important venue for all members of the community.

Grant received: £530 from the Dreams Charitable Fund

What for: A six week course hosted by Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service at Marlow Fire Station to give 16 young people from the Lane End area the experience of training with the emergency services and to learn team building and safety skills.

The joint initiative between the Fire Service and Lane End Youth and Community Centre youth workers invited agencies including Thames Valley Police, Drug and Alcohol Team and Ambulance Service to participate in the course to give a multi-agency input.

The young people were challenged to think about targets and goals for their future careers and were encouraged to participate in community events and initiatives, to improve their skills and experiences.
