Supporting Success at The Learning Lab

The Learning Lab is an after school homework club for children aged between 0 and 11 and their parents/carers.  It is run by TheWell@LentRise and is in an area of social deprivation in Burnham. The photo shows Alexandra Martin from Harwood Hutton and Bev Trevitt, our Outreach Officer, presenting the cheque. Buckinghamshire Community Foundation gave The Learning Lab a grant for £960  fromthe Harwood Hutton Named Fund towards courses to help children to improve their basic computer skills.

The Learning Lab started two years ago and since that time has gone from strength to strength increasing the number of children in attendance from 10 to 33 on two nights a week, not including their parents/carers.  They have had a number of successes in changing lives in this time for example:

·        One child had not been to school for over a year when they came to the Club.  They have now successfully been at school for one year.

·        An adult volunteer has decided to undertake teacher training as a result of working for the Learning Lab.

·        They have given children who act as carers for their parents a chance to do something for themselves.

·        They have successfully supported children who have suffered bereavement when one of their parents died.
