Why we do what we do!

To many people the charity world is a complete mystery.  Few people understand how the complexities and limitations of statutory and trust funding restrict the growth of community groups in the UK.

Community Foundations exist to enable and inspire individual people, philanthropists, businesses, trusts and local authorities to step out using their time, money, resources and experiences to make a difference.  The Buckinghamshire Community Foundation is one of 57 Foundations throughout the UK.

The Need in Buckinghamshire

Buckinghamshire has a population of approximately 479,000 people living in 188,000 households.  26% of our residents are aged 19 and under, whilst 15% are over 65, it is estimated that the number of people over 65 will increase to 21% and those under 19 will decline to 22%.

While much of Buckinghamshire is affluent there are pockets of relative deprivation and disadvantage and with an ageing population we need to make provision now to support our communities in the future.

Nationally, there are 380 people for every one charity. In Buckinghamshire, however, there are so many charities that this ratio is 190 people for every one charity. The challenge that the Foundation helps donors with is how to find and choose the right charities.
